Kathmandu— As COVID-19 cases continue to rise in India and other countries, Nepal faces an increasing risk due to its close proximity. With the virus spreading in neighboring India, concerns are growing about its possible transmission to Nepal.
The Epidemiology and Disease Control Division (EDCD) has reported adopting a high level of vigilance. According to the division’s director, Dr. Chandra Bhal Jha, a meeting has already been held with the World Health Organization (WHO) and Health Minister Pradip Paudel to address the issue.
Following the meeting, it was concluded that the surveillance system will be significantly strengthened. “There have been no cases in Nepal so far, but we are taking precautionary measures,” said Dr. Jha. “We are also working to make the health desks at border entry points and Tribhuvan International Airport more effective.”
He added that COVID-19 testing kits are currently in stock and will be distributed as needed. There is no immediate need to supply kits to all checkpoints unless necessary. Additionally, the division is actively spreading public awareness regarding symptoms of COVID-19 and preventive measures. A list of essential medical supplies for prevention has already been sent, and Dr. Jha claims that the division remains in a constant state of preparedness to respond to outbreaks.
WHO has also committed to completing the necessary procurement process for preparedness within a month.
According to infectious disease specialist Dr. Sher Bahadur Pun, although the virus has been spreading in India and other countries, there is currently no cause for alarm in Nepal. He emphasizes that while people continue to travel to and from Nepal, the situation does not warrant panic. “Although it is an infectious viral disease, there’s no evidence yet to suggest it is extremely severe,” said Dr. Pun. “However, it may pose complications for elderly individuals and those with chronic illnesses. So, we shouldn’t ignore it, but there’s no need to panic either.”
Dr. Pun recommends basic preventive measures such as:
Avoiding crowds as much as possible
Mandatory use of masks
Washing hands with soap and water
Taking extra caution if experiencing symptoms like cold or cough
