Kathmandu— Minister for Health and Population Pradip Paudel has stated that arrangements will be made to collect royalties from countries that hire doctors educated in Nepal. He explained that since the government bears a high cost to provide MBBS education, such a mechanism will be introduced.
Speaking at a program titled “Trauma and Injury Life Support” held at the National Trauma Center on Wednesday, he shared his perspective, saying he came to realize this during his participation in the World Health Assembly in Switzerland.
He said, “The state makes a significant investment to educate MBBS students. When they go abroad, it results in a huge loss to the country. We invest, and foreign countries benefit from their service.” In such cases, he proposed that arrangements should be made for state-to-state royalty payments.
He also highlighted that many doctors are leaving Nepal due to a lack of opportunities. Therefore, he advised not to renew administrative contract positions in hospitals like the Trauma Center if they exceed the actual need.
