More Relief for Patients: Health Insurance Coverage Raised to NPR 200,000

Kathmandu— In a major step toward easing the burden of medical expenses for patients with serious illnesses, Health and Population Minister Pradip Paudel has announced that those enrolled in Nepal’s national health insurance program will now receive up to NPR 200,000 in treatment support—double the previous amount.

Writing on his social media this morning, Minister Paudel stated that starting from Shrawan 1, the government will implement this expanded support specifically for patients suffering from eight critical health conditions: cancer, heart disease, kidney failure, head injury, spinal injury, sickle cell anemia, Parkinson’s disease, and Alzheimer’s disease.

‘This decision honors our prior commitment to help patients battling severe health conditions who are often unable to afford life-saving treatments,’ said Minister Paudel. ‘By increasing the treatment coverage from NPR 100,000 to NPR 200,000, we hope to ease the suffering of families affected by these illnesses.’

The Ministry of Health and Population had earlier written to the Health Insurance Board to proceed with the increment. The board’s meeting held late Tuesday night approved the decision, confirmed Executive Director Dr. Raghuraj Kafle.

Dr. Kafle noted that the revised coverage will come into effect from Shrawan 1, and the Health Insurance Board is now preparing to implement the change across all designated facilities.

The move is being widely welcomed as a long-overdue relief for patients and caregivers dealing with expensive and prolonged treatment for chronic and life-threatening diseases.
