Kathmandu— The government has increased the number of hospitals offering discounted or free treatment to senior citizens, aiming to make healthcare more accessible for the elderly.
According to the Ministry of Health and Population, 67 hospitals across the country will now provide such services. The list was recently expanded with the inclusion of Rukum East Hospital and Bhim Hospital.
The support is based on age, health condition, and financial background. Under the new guideline on geriatric health services:
People aged 60 to 69 will get 50% off on select treatments.
Those aged 70 to 79 with chronic illnesses or physical disabilities will get up to 75% off.
People aged 80 to 84 will receive more extensive support than those in the previous age group.
Those 85 and above will receive all available hospital services free of cost.
These benefits apply only to services in general wards. If a patient chooses a private cabin or special ward, the discounts won’t apply.
Hospitals included in the program are also expected to make their facilities more elder-friendly—especially emergency, outpatient, and inpatient services.
The government says the move is part of its ongoing effort to provide better care for Nepal’s aging population.
The 67 hospitals providing the service are listed below:
