New Omicron Subvariants of COVID-19 Detected in Nepal

Kathmandu – New genetic sequencing has confirmed the presence of Omicron subvariants of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in Nepal, based on samples collected from different geographic regions in June 2025.

According to the National Public Health Laboratory in Teku, out of 44 samples sequenced, one tested positive for the Omicron subvariant JN.1, 29 for XFG, and 14 for XFG. 3. Santosh Subedi, Information Officer at the laboratory, stated that among these, the XFG subvariant has been listed under the “Variants Under Monitoring” category by the World Health Organization, indicating that while it does not currently signal a high level of concern, it requires close observation.

This latest report confirms that COVID-19 circulation in Nepal remains dominated by Omicron variants. While scientific evidence so far suggests that most Omicron subvariants are less severe in terms of illness, they may still be highly transmissible.

Health officials emphasize the importance of ongoing surveillance and preventive measures to stay ahead of potential risks posed by emerging variants.
