Strengthening Health Infrastructure: Discussion Held Between Minister Gautam and Chinese Ambassador to Nepal

Kathmandu — The Minister for Health and Population, Hon. Dr. Sudha Gautam, held an important meeting with the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Nepal, H.E. Mr. Chen Song, at the Ministry today. The discussion focused on expanding the cooperation between the two countries in the field of health and medical services.

During the meeting, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to further solidify the existing health partnership between Nepal and China. The discussion centered on making the collaboration more sustainable, technology-driven, and beneficial for the Nepalese population.

One of the key highlights of the discussion was the plan to enhance the infrastructure and service capacity of BP Koirala Cancer Hospital in Bharatpur and Civil Service Hospital in Kathmandu. These institutions are expected to receive support in advanced medical equipment, skilled human resources, and specialized training programs. Collaboration in traditional medicine was also part of the discussion. Both parties expressed interest in integrating Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) with Nepal’s own Ayurveda system to promote holistic and culturally grounded healthcare options.

Establishment of a modern gene laboratory in Nepal with Chinese cooperation was discussed as well. Such a facility would mark a major milestone in Nepal’s health research and diagnostic capabilities—facilitating advancements in genetic research, early disease detection, and personalized treatment.

Both sides also discussed strengthening Nepal’s emergency health response systems. Drawing lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic, they emphasized the need for preparedness and efficient response mechanisms for future public health emergencies.

Additionally, cooperation in the cultivation and processing of medicinal herbs was explored. China’s technical expertise could help Nepal add value to its vast biodiversity and promote the sustainable use of medicinal resources for both traditional and modern healthcare industries.

Minister Gautam expressed heartfelt appreciation for China’s continuous support to Nepal’s health sector. She acknowledged the crucial role of the Chinese government in enhancing hospital infrastructure, improving cancer care, and providing generous assistance during the COVID-19 crisis through medical equipment, vaccines, and technical guidance. She emphasized that Nepal deeply values China’s longstanding friendship and consistent cooperation in strengthening Nepal’s healthcare system.
