Kathmandu – The Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of Nepal Police has detained five individuals from Hope Fertility and Diagnostic Pvt. Ltd., located in Babarmahal, on charges of illegally trading the eggs of underage girls.
According to CIB sources, the arrests were made following an investigation into allegations that the clinic had been involved in the illegal extraction and sale of eggs from girls under the age of 18. Despite being a facility meant to support infertile couples through IVF and other fertility treatments, the clinic was found to be engaging in unethical practices.
“Our investigation found that eggs were being collected from teenage girls—some younger than 18—under false pretenses or with tempting offers of money,” a CIB official said. “Once their eggs were extracted, the girls were reportedly paid small sums—around NPR 10,000—and sent home.”
Authorities say they acted on a formal complaint, which led to the investigation and subsequent arrests. While the names of the five individuals taken into custody have not yet been made public, the CIB has confirmed that a detailed report including their identities will be released soon.
The police believe the clinic lured vulnerable teenage girls with financial incentives and manipulated them into undergoing egg retrieval procedures—an act that is not only illegal under Nepali law but also raises serious ethical and medical concerns.
