Around 8,000 Patients Are Waiting for Organ Donors: MP Gautam

Kathmandu— Member of Parliament Pratima Gautam has strongly raised the issue of the dire condition of kidney patients and the challenges related to organ transplantation in the Parliament. She urged the government to effectively implement policies on organ transplantation and expedite the brain death program to save the lives of kidney patients.

MP Gautam stated, “Ninety percent of patients suffering from kidney failure are dying because they do not receive organ donations. Currently, around 8,000 patients are waiting for organ donors. Due to the lack of donors, most patients are dependent on dialysis, which makes their physical, mental, and financial lives extremely difficult.”

She pointed out that the government spends nearly NPR 1.5 billion annually on dialysis alone. Referring to the Human Organ Transplantation Regulation 2073, which allows for the retrieval of organs from brain-dead individuals, she noted that the provision has not been fully implemented, resulting in lost hope for many patients.

She emphasized that strengthening the effectiveness of the brain death program could significantly contribute to resolving the challenges faced by kidney patients. Through the Speaker, MP Gautam urged the government to take immediate steps to make the laws and policies related to organ transplantation more effective and to simplify and expedite the brain death program.
