At Least 70 Countries Missing Out on Treatment Amid Global Funding Cuts: WHO Chief

Geneva— The Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, has raised concerns over the devastating impact of global health funding cuts, revealing that at least 70 countries are experiencing critical setbacks in healthcare services.

Speaking at the opening session of the 78th World Health Assembly in Geneva on Monday, Dr. Tedros stated, “In at least 70 countries, patients are missing out on treatments, health facilities have closed, health workers have lost their jobs, and people face increased out-of-pocket health spending.”

The alarming statement highlights the growing strain on health systems worldwide as financial support dwindles, putting millions at risk—especially in low- and middle-income countries already grappling with fragile healthcare infrastructure.

The WHO chief emphasized the need for urgent and sustained investment in global health to prevent further deterioration in access to essential services and to uphold commitments to universal health coverage.

The 78th World Health Assembly, which brings together health leaders and delegates from around the world, will continue in Geneva throughout the week, addressing major global health priorities and strategies for strengthening health systems.
